Deployed or Far From Home? How Michigan Military Families Can Still Vote

Absentee and overseas ballots, the Federal Voting Assistance Program, and the deadlines that matter — so distance never costs your family its vote.

Serving your country should never cost you your vote. If you’re stationed away from home, deployed, or living overseas — or you’re the spouse or family member of someone who is — Michigan and federal law make sure your ballot still counts in the November 3 election. Here’s how to lock it in.

Start at FVAP — the official one-stop

The Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP.gov) is the government’s dedicated hub for military and overseas voters. It walks you through every step and has a voting assistance officer network behind it. Bookmark it — it’s the fastest path to a ballot.

Use the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA)

The FPCA is the magic form: it registers you and requests your absentee ballot at the same time. Submit one each year you want to vote absentee as a military or overseas voter — it keeps you on the list and tells your Michigan clerk where to send your ballot.

This covers:

  • Active-duty service members, wherever you’re stationed
  • Eligible family members living with you away from home
  • U.S. citizens living overseas

Get your ballot the fast way

When mail has to cross the country — or an ocean — days matter. On your FPCA you can ask Michigan to send your ballot electronically, which skips the slow trip out to you. You still return your voted ballot following the instructions provided, but getting it in your hands fast is half the battle.

Mind the deadlines — earlier is always safer

Deadlines are tighter the farther you are from home, so don’t wait. Request your ballot as early as you can and send it back the moment it’s done. Confirm the current Michigan dates at Michigan.gov/Vote or through FVAP.

If your ballot doesn’t show up in time

You have a safety net: the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB). If you requested a ballot but it hasn’t arrived, you can use the FWAB from FVAP.gov as a backup so your vote still gets in. Nobody who did their part should be left without a say.

Families back home count too

Holding down the household while your service member is away? You can register and vote absentee right here in Michigan with no excuse needed. Make a plan together — one of you overseas, one of you at the kitchen table — so both ballots make it in.

Military and overseas voting is one more system with its own forms, acronyms, and deadlines — exactly the kind of thing we help families sort out every day. If you hit a wall, reach out and we’ll help you get it done.

Mi Service Matters is strictly nonpartisan. We don’t support or oppose any candidate, party, or ballot proposal — we just want every veteran and family to be able to vote and to get the help they’ve earned. Always confirm current rules and deadlines at Michigan.gov/Vote or with your local clerk.
